The outline of history

Region, which at present is a part of the Golub-Dobrzyn's county belonged throughout the ages to two separate lands: chełmińsk and dobrzyń, which were separated from each other by a river Drwęca. The river was not only a geographical border but also it was a line border between Poland and the Teutonic Knight order nation in the years 1231-1454; in the years 1466-1772 it separated chełmińsk province from dobrzyń's lands. From 1815-1918 it separated The Prussian partition from the Russian partition. Mentioned divisions left a mark on the history of these described lands. Currently the trial colony was formed throughout several millenniums. The hydrographic system of Drwęca along with its tributary, created lucrative conditions to develop. The first tracks of human camps on these lands are from before 8000 years (discovered near the area of Węgiersk). In IX-X century in the period of Polan tribe organization, the present county was occupied likely by a group of people from kujawy. In X-XI century the lands settled on the north side of Drwęca were entered to the chełmińsk's administration unit, while lands lying on the south side found themselves partly in the rypińsk's administration unit and słonsk's (later kikolsk's). Up to now visible marks are the early mediaeval (VIII-XIII century) defense gords just like in Chełmoń, Ciechocin, Lisewo and Ostrowite.

Between year 1148-1250 włocławskie's bishopric has gained town rights by receiving a key to ciechocin's lands and to the ostrowicko-golubskie's properties without Lisewo and Kowalewo. Already in XII and the beginning of XIII century in that area there were new parishes created. From 1217 year as a result of a close border with Prussia, there starts a period of constant invasions by pagan Prussians (in 1220 year Kowalewo's lands were destroyed). To stop the invasions prince Konrad I of Masovia gave chełminsk's lands to the Teutonic Knights. The knights entered to Prussia in order to create their own country and gradually started to conquer those territories.

Around 1275 year the village Kowalewo was rebuild and next to it the Teutonic Knights set up their town. From that day Kowalewo had become an administration unit. The Teutonic Knights proceeded similar with the ostrowicko-golubskie's properties. In that place they created an administration unit and between year 1296-1309 they built a castle in order to guard the passage across the Drwęca river. About 1293 year Golub was set up in the Drwęca's curve, at the foot of the castle.

In this period the Teutonic Knights began a systematic cultivation of the lands placing a lot of new villages, importing settlers from Germany and Sląsk. Till the year 1410 there was a intensive economical development of the mentioned lands, especially Golub gain a huge importance in the means of a strategy point. The citizens of Golub gain wealth by general trade with their neighbor land Dobrzyń. Till the year 1310 it was ruled by a friendly to the Teutonic Knights prince Siemowit, later the control was given to Władysław I Elbow-high. In 1329 the land was conquered by the Teutonic Knights and its occupation lasted till 1343. From 1378 the ruler Władysław of Opole left and later sold it to the Teutonic Knights – except the town rights to ciechocin's lands that belonged to the włocławskie's bishopric – dobrzyń's lands. It was repurchase in the year 1404, although in 1409 it was conquered once more by the Saint Mary’s Knights.
